The Georgia Debate Union emerged victorious at the Crowe-Warken Debate Tournament at the United States Naval Academy, recently held over Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend in Annapolis, Maryland. The team of Johnnie Stupek (sophomore, Sandy Springs) and Nathan Rice (sophomore, Roswell) defeated Cornell University in the finals. Their road to first place also included wins against the University of Pittsburgh, Wake Forest University, the University of Minnesota, and Dartmouth College. Mr. Stupek was recognized as the third overall speaker at the tournament, while Mr. Rice was recognized as the 5th overall speaker. Additionally, the team of Swapnil Agrawal (sophomore, Chamblee) and Advait Ramanan (sophomore, Howard County, Maryland) finished in 5th place, with wins over Wake Forest University, the University of Pittsburgh, and Georgia State University. The prestigious tournament at the Naval Academy featured nearly 100 teams from around the country, including teams from the United States Military Academy, the University of Florida, Boston College, and Gonzaga University. The top finish at the Naval Academy represents the fourth tournament victory by the Georgia Debate Union in 2016-2017, following wins at Samford University, Liberty University, and the University of Miami.
