Degree Programs The University of Georgia program in communication studies grants degrees at both the MA and PhD level. The PhD program, with its coursework, exams, guided dissertation research, and training in teaching aims to place graduates in both post-secondary faculty positions and in. Our doctoral students pursue a wide range of topics in their dissertation research, and have recently published articles in top journals in the field. Teaching Opportunities The graduate program in communication studies at UGA is dedicated to preparing both MA and PhD students to be outstanding teachers at the post-secondary level. Students on assistantships have the chance to work as graders and lead discussion sections. All graduate students serving as teaching assistants are required to take a pedagogy course. This specialized seminar equips students for their roles at UGA and future teaching careers. In this seminar, students receive training in leading discussions, addressing classroom challenges, self-assessing their teaching strengths and weaknesses, and applying various effective teaching methods. At the Center for Teaching and Learning, graduate students are provided with resources, including an orientation before fall classes. Financial Support Merit-based teaching and research assistantships offer a stipend and cover nearly all fees for both MA and PhD students. Additionally, enhancement grants are available for highly qualified applicants. Most of our graduate students hold teaching assistantships with manageable workloads. Fellowships are awarded to exceptionally qualified candidates and doctoral students nearing completion. The department also provides travel and research grants to support MA and PhD students in attending conferences and conducting research. Research Resources
