Our 2019-2020 competitive season was cut short due to COVID-19, but the season was a success! Check out some highlights from the season: · Members of the GDU qualified for the National Debate Tournament, the most prestigious national championship tournament in intercollegiate debate, for the 31st consecutive year · Members of the GDU performed exceptionally well academically during this school year (cumulative GPA was 3.5) · Two members of the team were recognized by the Cross-Examination Debate Association (CEDA) for academic achievement; One student earned Summa Cum Laude National Scholar honors (minimum 3.75 GPA and more than 18 rounds debated) and one student earned Magna Cum Laude National Scholar honors (minimum 3.5 GPA and more than 18 rounds debated) · The squad finished the season ranked 3rd in the CEDA Southeast Region rankings; top 25 in national rankings · We hosted our annual University of Georgia Bulldog Debates for high schools where we had 80 teams from 5 different states attend · The GDU hosted members of the Japanese National Team during their ten-city tour of the United States. On March 1, the members of the GDU and the JNT participated in a public debate on campus where they discussed the viability and necessity of the US-Japanese Security Relationship · Members of the GDU held an additional public debate on campus where they discussed whether the United States should cooperate with other nations like China and Russia in space endeavors · Members of the team reached elimination rounds at the following tournaments: Georgia State, Mary Washington University, Georgetown, Naval Academy, and the District 6/Southeast CEDA Championship We look forward to resuming competition in the fall!
