Image: Steve Heimler of Heimler's History helps high schoolers study for their AP exams with his YouTube channel. With over a million YouTube channel subscribers, Heimler posts AP exam review videos on U.S. History, World History, Human Geography, Government, and European History. After graduating UGA with a degree from Franklin College of Arts and Sciences in Communication Studies (formerly Speech Communication), Heimler used skills gained in the program first as a pastor and then as a history teacher. In 2017 Heimler started making videos to first help homeschool student's in Georgia's suburbs study for AP exams. After realizing he didn't have the hard drive space for his video library, he began using YouTube for the free video storage. His viewership slowly rose, but when the College Board overhauled the AP curriculum, Heimler was the first to create review materials for it leading to an enormous jump in viewership. In 2023, Heimler went full time with YouTube. He would spend hours writing scripts, shooting videos, planning animations, and coordinating with other AP teachers to ensure his content's accuracy. In a recent article, "Lights, Camera, AP History," with Beyond the Arch, Heimler reflects on how he believes his UGA speech communication degree has been very important in helping him accomplish his goals. "I'm actually so grateful that I spent the time I did learning how to articulate what is in my mind so people can understand it and feel served by it."
