During the last fifteen years members of the Georgia Debate Union have been active participants in the Committee on International Discussion and Debate (CIDD) program. During the 1990s, two Debate Union members were selected to the US traveling teams. Kate Shuster represented the program during a six week tour of Japan. And, Michael Hester visited the United Kingdom as a member of the US team in 1996. More recently, Shawn Powers was selected to represent the US in a tour of Eastern Europe. Dr. Panetta was selected to coach the US international team that visited Russia in 1997. We have also hosted a variety of international traveling teams since 1990. Visitors to Athens have included debaters from: Great Britain, Japan, Russia and the Soviet Union. Our debaters have also joined with other UGA students to debate the Oxford Debating Union.
