2017 Communication Department Awards and Recognitions

Award Winner

This year’s Olive M. Cone Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Devin Sinclair.  Devin is one of our most talented and hardest working students.  Not only will she graduate Magna Cum Laude in December, she is a Zell Miller Scholarship winner, a Presidential Scholar, and on the Dean’s List.

Devin puts her communication studies knowledge to work every day.  She has tutors for the Athletic Association, will ring you up for ice cream at the Dairy Queen, and has worked in Guest Relations at the Wildwater, LTD zipline company.  Given all of that, she still finds time to volunteer both as a bilingual tutor at Oasis and at the Athens Humane Society.

As many faculty in Communication Studies will tell you, she is invested in her studies.  “I have a newfound passion for analyzing everything I encounter – media, interpersonal discussions, politics, anything,” she tells us.  “I have learned that rhetorical studies can give ordinary students a sort of cultural clairvoyance with which they can navigate society.”

We are proud to have you among us, Devin.  Congratulations!

Each year the Department of Communication also gives a couple of awards to our faculty and graduate students.

The award for Faculty Excellence was given to Dr. Analisa Arroyo. Dr. Arroyo was recognized for her dedication to her students, as well as her sharp wit and sense of humor. Graduate student Mollie Murphy received the Hale Award for Graduate Student Service. Mollie is an incredible team player, and receives this award for her selflessness and willingness to contribute to department events as well as the academic progress of her peers.

We would also like to congratulate this year's Lambda Pi Eta National Honor Society Inductees.  Lambda Pi Eta was initiated by the students of the Department of Communication at the University of Arkansas in 1985.  The Speech Communication Association established it as an affiliate organization and national honor society in 1994.  In February of 1996, Lambda Pi Eta was inducted into the Association of College Honor Societies.  There are currently 250 chapters worldwide. Here at UGA, Lambda Pi Eta is operated under the auspices of UNCA, the Undergraduate National Communication Association.  The membership of Lambda Pi Eta is composed of undergraduate students who have declared an interest in the field of communication and have achieved a high level of academic excellence.
